Animal Rescue Center

Volunteering at the Jaguar Rescue Center is a transformative experience, especially considering that 90% of the animals rehabilitated here are successfully released back into the wild. For volunteers, this presents a unique opportunity to actively contribute to wildlife conservation in a meaningful way. By dedicating your time and skills, you directly participate in the rehabilitation process, preparing animals for their return to their natural habitats. Staying at our center offers a hands-on learning experience, allowing volunteers to work closely with a diverse range of wildlife, including jaguars, monkeys, and exotic birds. This close interaction provides a deep understanding of animal behavior, rehabilitation techniques, and the challenges faced by these species. It's an invaluable educational opportunity for aspiring conservationists, biologists, and animal lovers.

Animal Rescue Center

Ecuador is one of the most biodiverse countries on earth, being a territory of huge importance
for nature conservation and tourism. However, faces one of the most serious problems on our planet, wildlife trafficking, motivated by scientific purposes, commercialization of skins, or live species.

The “Los Jaguares” Rescue Center volunteer program aims to create a space for the protection of endangered species, responsible tourism, education, and community development through training, inclusion, and integral participation in these spaces, of all local stakeholders and tourists.

Los Jaguares Rescue Center is an animal sanctuary located in Macas, Morona-Santiago province, in Ecuador. This rescue center was created by Enrique, a former veterinarian.

The purpose of the center is to save wild animals, such as jaguars, pumas or margays.

Those animals live in the Amazonian forest and are often hunted because they could be dangerous. The locals and the indigenous communities that live in the forest are afraid that those animals could attack them – the animals won’t do it unless they are attacked first.
Some wild animals are also hunted for their fur, or to be sold as pets in Asia or the Middle
East. The center also rescues smaller animals, such as monkeys or coatis, whose meat is very much appreciated by local populations.

Volunteering in our Amazon animal rescue center, operational since 1999, is of utmost importance for several reasons. Firstly, it directly contributes to the well-being and survival of endangered and injured wildlife in one of the world’s most biodiverse regions. By offering your time and skills, you play a vital role in rehabilitating animals, providing medical care, and ensuring they can eventually return to their natural habitats.

Secondly, volunteering in our rescue center aids in the conservation of Amazonian species, many of which are facing severe threats due to deforestation, climate change, and illegal wildlife trade. Your efforts help protect these animals, preserving the rich biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest for future generations.

Moreover, volunteering provides a unique educational experience. By working closely with rescued animals, you gain invaluable insights into their behavior, ecology, and the challenges they face. This knowledge is essential for raising awareness about conservation issues, both locally and globally, fostering a sense of responsibility toward our planet’s wildlife.

The following is a detail of day activities related to jaguars and other felines care and management, although depending on the volunteer time and the participant’s stay, the activities can be diversified or extended with complementary activities.
